The question we hear most often: "Does getting a tattoo hurt?" The short answer: some discomfort is normal, but it's more bearable than most people expect. Pain varies depending on the area, the person and the length of the session.

Pain Map by Body Area

  • Less painful: forearm, upper arm (biceps), calf, shoulder
  • Moderate: back, wrist, ankle, neck
  • More sensitive: ribs, spine, inner arm, hand/fingers, back of the knee

Areas close to bone and with thin skin are generally more sensitive; areas with dense muscle tissue are more comfortable.

Tips to Reduce Pain

  • Sleep well before your session and don't arrive hungry.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol (it thins the blood).
  • Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area.
  • Keep your breathing steady; tension increases pain.
  • Plan long sessions with your artist, taking breaks.

What Does the Process Feel Like?

Most people describe the sensation as a "scratching" or "hot itching." After the first few minutes, the body adapts. A professional and swift application directly affects both the result and your comfort.
